![]() Props are often used in face-to-face training and may be used in virtual training as well. The term “prop” derives from “theatrical properties,” and refers to objects used by actors on stage to contribute to the storyline. Think about Mary Poppins’ umbrella and carpetbag! Why use a prop in training? Props focus attention on the presentation and may add a bit of interest, fun, or humor to the session. Props can increase memory of the content and interaction with other participants. Props should have a purpose. For example, in virtual training, participants could be asked to look around the room for an object that represents something they just learned. The prop/object might be shared with other participants in the full group using gallery view, in breakout rooms, or by typing in the chat. In a virtual scavenger hunt, participants are given a brief period of time to locate a prop that links to the session content such as a children’s book for literacy training or household items that could be used to teach counting for a session on math. When team building is the goal, participants in a virtual session may be asked to identify an object in advance of the training. For example, participants might share: – an item from their childhood – an object representing a special memory – something on or made from paper – an item that is part of a hobby – something that does not belong to them but is important to them an object that represents them as a professional Try introducing props into your next virtual training as an opener, closer or energy recharger. |
